Question: Can I use Clindamycin for two infections?
I was given amoxicillan for a sinus infection. However, I also have a vaginitis infection, which I get once a year or so and take clindamycin for. I called my gyn. who wasn’t in but a colleague stated I could take the clindamycin and it might treat both, but to call the other physician I can’t get in touch with the other physician and am leaving on a flight tomorrow morning, but need to take one tonight. I’m in a weird predicament. What do I do?

Clindamycin and Amoxicillin treat different kinds of bacteria. (Some are treated by one, some are treated by the other, and some will be treated by both. It just depends on which bacteria you are dealing with) They might both cover what you have, but you are superior off speaking to your other doctor. You can also ask your pharmacist, if you got them both at the same pharmacy. Clindamycin is often prescribed as a alternative for Amoxicillin if the patient has allergies, for strep infections, as well as ear infections.

But since you got one (you didn’t specify order) after/while being treated for the other, I’m guessing that one of the bacterial infections is not covered by that antibiotic or it would have been treated and you would not have had to go in for another appt. Does that make sense? If the initial antibiotic covered both bacteria, you would have just gone on, not even knowing that something else was “brewing”. It would have been silently treated along with the initial issue.

See if you can be prescribed something that will cover both. Your stomach is going to be in some rough shape if you are taking 2 antibiotics at once. Call your doc right away if you get diarrhea. It is a common (and potentially serious) side effect of the Clindamycin.

If you can’t get in touch with the other doctor, you should call the clinic back and ask to talk to a collegue as soon as possible. If the doc is on vacation, he/she will have appointed a alternative on-call doc to help patients needing care.

Good luck! Hope you’re feeling superior soon!

no clindamycin is used to treat bacteria that are anaerobic and can be even used for some skin problems

amoxicillin is used to treat bacterial infections in general ie bladder infections ear infections etc and concentrates on controlling the pain caused by the infection as it has penicillin
