Taking antibiotics, advice on preventing a yeast infection?

Question: Taking antibiotics, advice on preventing a yeast infection?
I was prescribed 10 days of Amoxicillin. I was told by my physician to consume yogurt each day to prevent a yeast infection. But she didn’t state how much of it to eat. Does it matter what kind of yogurt it is? How much should I eat? How often should I consume it? Should I have a cup each time I take a pill or what? Also, is there anything else I can do to help prevent it? Thanks for the advice :-)

Consuming yoghurt seems to keep the healthy equilibrium of natural bacteria found in the vagina, not allowing the fungus to thrive.

When buying yoghurt, be sure to buy yoghurt with live and active cultures.

Keep it, and consume it cold, as high heat will shorten the life of beneficial bacteria in yoghurt.

A cup a day should be ample.

  1. hope says:

Yes, have yogurt after every pill. Also, get acidophilus pills or chewables from the store and have one before each antibiotic.

When you take antibiotics, it kills both the good and bad bacteria in your body. The good bacteria in yogurt that kills yeast is called Lactobacillus Acidophilus. Eating yogurt helps your body replenish this bacteria, so make sure that you eat yogurt with ‘Live Cultures’. For a more potent alternative, you can take Acidophilus supplements, these have the dosages labelled on the container.

Go for plain yogurt because sugar feeds the yeast and that is counterproductive in your circumstances. You don’t need to go overboard with it, just have some with each meal.

Generally, avoid sugar and alcohol for the duration of the 10 days and the week following it. This is like cutting off the yeast’s food supply and helps prevent the outbreak of a yeast infection.
