Thrush – Effective Treatment For Candida And Thrush

Candida, or thrush, is a really troublesome condition that affects both women and men.

Anyone who has ever experienced thrush or candida knows only too well of the anguish and distress that this troubling condition can cause. So what is thrush and can it be prevented?

The medical study for thrush is candida or candidosis. Thrush is caused by an overabundance and imbalance of bacteria and natural fungal yeast found in the body. It commonly manifests around the woman’s genitals even though it can affect men and might also appear in the mouth.

Oral Thrush

Oral Thrush can be seen as cream colored or pale yellow spots within the mouth which can be very uncomfortable; it is often accompanied by a burning, sore sensation. If you are experiencing such symptoms, a doctor should be consulted to diagnose the condition as it can mask other more serious conditions such as mouth cancer.

New born babies can develop oral thrush from picking it up during birth when passing down the birth canal. Drinks of cool water, especially after a milk feed, help to relieve the discomfort.

Other sufferers can include denture wearers, people with poor nutrition or an immune deficiency as well as those prescribed steroid medication or steroid inhalers.

Treatment is through the use of prescribed antifungal medicines that generally stay in the mouth for a while such as pastels or mouth washes.

Genital Thrush in Women

Initial genital symptoms tend to be an itching and a burning soreness in this sensitive area. This is soon followed by swelling and itching deep within. Sometimes the woman also experiences a discharge. The anguish is such that, no matter what the sufferer is doing, it can't be ignored.

Naturally, fast and immediate relief is desired by the sufferer. Unfortunately, effective treatment takes time, however washing with cool water or soaking in a cool bath can help to bring relief as can applying garment rash cream or specific creams formulated for the job.

Longer term relief can be obtained from the application of an overnight pessary, either a brand study (which generally has an external cream for simultaneous use), or the pharmacy’s own brand. These are accessible both on prescription and over the counter.

Doctors might prescribe weekly pessaries or tablets for women who suffer from frequent attacks of thrush in order to place a stop to the annoying cycle.

There are several things which can cause thrush in the genital area. These range from antibiotics or the controlled application of chemotherapy; wearing close fitting underwear and/or tights; overly rigorous cleaning with soap of the affected area and diabetes.

It can also be brought on through bodily changes caused by pregnancy or passed on through intimate contact from one partner to another. Despite the latter, thrush is not classed as a sexually transmitted infection or STI.

Understanding the reasons that thrush occurs helps in controlling and eradicating the condition. Common sense home control measures can include:

- Stop wearing tights. If tights must be worn, use crotch-less ones

- Wear loose fitting panties, jeans, pants/trousers

- Wear pantie liners which are renewed regularly to ensure the infection does not remain or spread. Frequently changing sanitary wear is a must

- When washing the genital area, do not use soap. Use aqueous cream or a soap alternative instead

- Be sure to thoroughly clean your hands after visiting the restroom, or try applying cream to the area affected

- Keep a cloth specifically for the genital area and boil-wash it regularly

- Refrain from using perfumed products on the genital area as these can cause irritation and encourage thrush.

Genital Thrush in Men

Although not as common as with women, men might also suffer from genital thrush. In men, it tends to show itself under the foreskin and/or red patches on the shaft. A discharge might also be noticed.

Treatment is by the use of anti-fungal creams or tablets.

Some home control measures are identical to those suggested for women. e.g.

- Wear loose fitting underwear, jeans, pants/trousers

- When washing the genital area, stay away from the use of soap. Use a water based (aqueous) cream or a non-allergenic soap subsitute instead.

- Wash your hands after going to the toilet and wash or use cream on the affected area.

- Keep a cloth specifically for the genital area and boil-wash it regularly.

- Refrain from using perfumed products on the genital area as these can cause irritation and encourage thrush.

Finally, thrush and candida, though unpleasant, can indeed be controlled by good hygiene, though it might not necessarily be caused by poor hygiene itself.

Diagnosis by a medical doctor, often through a swab test, is highly suggested in order to rule out other conditions and obtain the correct medication.

Question: What causes thrush in a babys mouth and what can cure it?
It never started til after we started using powered milk (within the last week), once coming home from the hospital. My baby is 17 days old. Baby is goin to the physicians tomorrow for her 2 week check up.

Best answer:

Answer by cyanne2ak
Quite frankly that happens because their mouth is open when they are coming through the birth canal. There is some stuff you can get from the pediatrician to pain the baby’s mouth with (turns the mouth purple).

What do you think? Answer below!

  2. bad cook says:

Is it really thrush? or can you wipe it off. If it’s really thrush that is a candida infection (yeast). that will need medication. the Dr will let you know for sure. good luck and congratulations!

  3. Orlando57 says:

talk to the doc but thrush is a case of yeast infection and an old indian remedy my mom used, was sage tea ,one teaspoon to a cup and rub the gums and tongue with a finger dipped in the cooled liquid inside a soft clothe the tea dries the yeast out and is a mild astringent ,,an olde part cherokee dude

  4. dmercer12679 says:

Your baby can get it other ways besides the birth canal. It is a yeast infection in the mouth. They can get it a lot of ways, just like how you would get a yeast infection.

  6. Me.Myself.I says:

you have to get a presciption

  7. yoy161 says:

how can you sure its thrush or just a whitish in your babys tongue? does it makes your babys uncomfortable? or might be just a milk residues,if it is, make sure you clean your babys mouth by using a clean cloth everytime you bathe your baby everyday, gently you can rubbing it off.

  8. button says:

We thought that our son had thrush , but it was just formula that was left in his mouth stuck to his tounge and cheecks, if it can’t be wiped off then it may be thrush, our doctor first gave us some medicine for it then another doctor wiped it out and told us it was not thrush at all . He said that if it bleeds then its thrush and to not wipe it any more. Kinda scary to use the word bleed but thats what he said.

  9. sparkling_apple says:

Thrush in the mouth is an over growth of bacteria. Some babies may have thrush two or more times before they become one. The best thing to do to keep it from reoccuring is boil all his nipples and pacifiers or replace them once he has started antibiotics. Also if it can be wiped off the lips and tongue, it may not be thrush. Speak with your baby’s dr. He will be able to look at it and tell for sure what it is.Also you may want to buy silicone nipples and pacifers, they can be boiled once a week unlike latex, which you can only boil once.

  10. candy says:

it is caused from a virus in the mouth. and you can get rid of it by going to the doctor they will coat the infants mouth and it will take time to heal.

  11. ILY says:

It is a yeast infection in the mouth and your doctor can gice you a antibiotic for it.

  12. professional_mother says:

Thrush is a fungal infection of the baby’s mouth and/or mother’s nipples. (It is caused by a yeast, and not a virus or bacteria.) There are many causes. The most common one is “unknown” but others are the use of antibiotics (they kill off the bacteria, leaving other microorganisms like yeast to grow faster) and contagion (thrush is *extremely* contagious). If your baby is less than a month old, she probably got it in the hospital, where nurses often (don’t get too grossed out!!) often go from baby to baby changing diapers without washing in between.

Thrush shows up in the baby’s mouth as raised white dots. A solid white tongue is *not* a sign of thrush; it is usually just a stain. But there can sometimes be raised white dots on top of the white stain. And sometimes a baby has it without obvious symptoms, although it may be painful for her, particularly at the beginning of a feeding.

The cure is to use an antifungal. Many of these are prescription drugs, but there are over-the-counter treatments, too. For more information, see the sources section below. These pages are written by Dr. Jack Newman, a Toronto pediatrician who is an expert at all things related to breastfeeding. (Breastfed babies can give thrush to their mothers and get it back again repeatedly.)

  13. bodybagbetty says:

esentially, thrush is a mild yeast infection. an antibiotic [amoxicillan] will help but if you can’t do that, put some grapefruit seed axtract [found at healthfood store] on your nipple or the bottle nipple. it will not harm the baby and it will help clear it up.
