Small amounts of the candida fungus are present in the mouth, digestive tract, and skin of most healthy people and are normally kept in check by other bacteria and microorganisms in the body. However, certain illnesses, stress, or medications can disturb the delicate balance, causing the fungus candida to grow out of control, causing infection.

Medications that upset the balance of microorganisms in the mouth and may cause thrush include corticosteroids, antibiotics, and birth control pills. Illnesses or medical situations that make candida infection more likely to develop include uncontrolled diabetes, HIV infection, cancer, dry mouth, or pregnancy (caused by the hormonal changes that occur with pregnancy). People who smoke or wear dentures that don’t fit properly also are at increased risk for thrush. In addition, babies can pass the infection to their mothers during breast-feeding.

Your vaginal yeast infection probably has nothing to do with a babies Thrush. But Thrush is Yeast.
This is common in babies since their immune systems are weak.
Just watch out for your nipples if your baby has thrush, you can get it too and need to get treated, otherwise you pass it back and forth.

No, your yeast infection has nothing to do with you babes thrush. Thrush is nothing to freak out about. It is a normal fungis that a lot of babies get. Thrush should be treated with an oral antifungal med. You get thrush when a yeast called candida, normally found on the body, grows out of control.
In babies, candida causes thrush because babies’ immune systems are not yet strong enough to control the growth of the yeast. Older people get thrush because their immune systems can weaken with age.

You passed the thrush (yeast) to her through the birth canal. And the suggestion to get antibiotics in NOT correct. Antibiotics will kill the bacteria NOT yeast. You need an antifungal. There is also a probiotic called BabyDopholis that I would give her to begin to replenish the gut with good bacteria (if you had antibiotics while in labor this could have also perpetuated it. Antibiotic kill ALL bacteria. . .including the good kind that lives in everyones gut. You need to be taking a good probitoics as well) You can also swab the probiotic in her mouth to kill the yeast. I will assume that you are nursing. If you are, then I would start taking odorless garlic tablets. Babies LOVE garlic but it will also help her fight the yeast. It will guard you from getting thrush on your nipples and up into your milk ducts. There is nothing worse than getting thrush in your milk ducts. Also, you can use gentian violet on your nipples and it will help your baby. You can find it at the pharmacy. It purple and will stain so be careful. And don’t freak out when you baby gets a purple mouth. It’s doing it’s job that way to kill the yeast. I called my daughter the purple people eater after the first time she used it. I didn’t know it would turn her mouth purple and did freak out. My inlaws were coming to meet her TWO days after I did this. It did finally go away but there was some left on her face when they arrived. :) Watch your sugar intake for a while as well. Sugar will feed yeast.

    God Bless.

PS. I have systemic yeast and fight this on a daily basis. It all started with the thrush in my daughter’s mouth that I gave to her. I would consider treating yourself as well. There are medications that drs can give you. I can’t use them because they hard on the liver and I already have liver damage from another drug I took in college. :( But you can at least talk to your drs about them. It might be easier than going to the natural route which is my only option.

You’ve got some good answers on what thrush is…yogurt is a good place to get probiotics, just don’t buy that kind with all the sweetener, just plain yogurt, slather it on YOU, swab her mouth, every time you nurse. Cut out all sweeteners, the yeast THRIVE on it in both of you. Make sure you’re boiling bottle nipples, paci’s, any toys in her mouth.

I usually cut straight to the chase and use Gentian Violet. My MIL shared it with me when I had my first. It is very effective, the draw back is that it’s HOT purple and stains like the dickens. The amount you get on the tippy tip end of a q tip is more than enough to swab her mouth, and she will drool it EVERYWHERE. So put her in some old tshirt and put an old towel under her while she’s playing. Once it’s dried it’s okay, but her mouth and lips will be purple a while. Once a day for three days and thrush is gone. If you breastfeed, do your nipples as well (joy…I know) It’s safe, and effective. just….inconvenient. But I met one of my best friends that way, she saw me at the grocery with my purple faced baby and laughed and said “Thrush?” we’ve been best friends since!

Yep! It’s the same virus. In fact, if her thrush isn’t treated and you are nursing, it gets on your nipples and you get a yeast infection, and back, and forth, and so on.
(The medicine the dr recommended for us is Gentian violet, it’s over the counter, relatively cheap. You swab it once a day in her mouth with a cotton swab… and make sure she has a bib on, because EVERYTHING will be purple. Do this for three days, it works like a charm!)
